My husband and I welcomed our first baby on June 29, 2022. We took classes, read books, and tried to educate ourselves before our daughter was born (including the American Academy of Pediatrics New Mother’s Guide to Breastfeeding, which was a great resource!). As any parent knows, nothing really prepares you for what’s in store when you are handling your first miraculous bundle of joy.
Our daughter was born on a Wednesday, and our OB/GYN’s office was closed the Friday two days after. Then it was the 4th of July holiday, so needless to say, the resources available to me were very limited, which was very hard for a first-time mom who was 100% determined to exclusively breastfeed her baby girl! Admittedly, I was given a few practice sessions post-delivery while I was still admitted at our local medical center. However, there was just so much to process, and the information didn’t stick. I thought it would come ‘naturally’ like my strong maternal instincts would kick in, and I would intuitively understand how to feed my baby. This was absolutely not the case! I was really struggling to get the correct ‘latch.’ I was doing so many things incorrectly, and it was causing me an immense amount of pain, but I was determined. I told myself, I see why so many women “can’t” breastfeed. My nipples were cracked, bleeding, and so tender, but I persevered.
Fortunately for us, two days after our daughter was born, one of our horses managed to get a 4” stick stuck in her front leg. I called our vet, and on our first trip to town as a family of three, we dropped our horse off at our veterinarian’s office (on the way to the Pediatrician’s). It was a bit exciting; fortunately, we have an amazing vet who got her all fixed up in no time. When we picked her up on our way home, we visited and proudly showed him our new addition. He very kindly mentioned to us that his wife is a Lactation Consultant. I had won the lottery. Laura Lundquist was EXACTLY what I needed. I brought our daughter to her home, and she was extremely kind, professional, knowledgeable, and compassionate. She made me feel entirely comfortable. My only regret during our session was that I didn’t record it! She was a WEALTH of information. She verbalized things in an easy-to-understand manner, she would explain something, then show me, then have me try for myself. She is a great teacher and absolutely someone who cared for my baby’s health as well as my own. If I didn’t have Laura’s help, I don’t think I could have sustained the health of my baby through exclusive breastfeeding. I am proud to say I have been able to exclusively breastfeed our daughter, who is now almost 8 months old! I can’t thank Laura enough. From the bottom of my heart, she has made such a huge impact on our lives. We are so extremely grateful for her services.
I 100% recommend Laura if you are having any difficulties breastfeeding. She is one in a million. Also – if you’re looking for a large animal vet, I would highly recommend Laura’s amazing husband – Dr. Seth Lundquist, who works at Alpine Animal Hospital in Pocatello, ID. He has kept our (and our family’s) horses, dogs, and cats in excellent health! A big thank you to him as well for the referral!
